The Apsley Flames Atom team saw 8 of their 16 players compete in the Liftlock Atom Skills Competition on Tuesday, January 10th. Four of the players moved on to the finals resulting in a 2nd place overall finish for Cody Dunford in Stick Handling, 1st overall for Noah Olauson in the Shoot Out and 1st overall in Stick Handling for Keagan Perks. The Apsley Flames were one point away from clinching the Team Award.
The Apsley Atom team was placed in the highest division for house/local league teams, the 'EEE' division. The Flames played their first game of the tournament on Friday afternoon against the PHA Stingrays and won 4-1. Saturday morning they faced Perth Lanark, an Ottawa A class house/local league team, and fell 7-1.
The third game for the Flames was Saturday afternoon against the strong Lindsay Teal squad they faced in December at Silver Stick and squeaked out a 3-2 overtime win. Apsley needed a win, and Lindsay only needed a tie to move on to the semi's. Noah Olauson and Cody Dunford both scored for the Flames and Gavin Swift stood on his head giving Apsley a 2-0 win!
Apsley finished 2nd in their pool and had to face the 1st place team from the other pool in the semi-final game Saturday evening. Noah Olauson scored a hattrick and Keagan Perks added two more finishing off the Manvers Mustangs 5-2. The win landed the Flames a spot in the Championship game.
Sunday morning the boys and girls faced the strong Perth Lanark team once more. Unfortunately the Flames were outclassed, although they did improve on their Saturday morning score, Apsley lost 7-2. For the 6th time this season one of our Apsley Flames teams won the 'Finalists' title.
It was a great weekend, the team was able to play their final game at the Memorial Centre and even received a private tour of the Pete's dressing room!
